Right now, most people treat each branded platform like it's a place with a cohesive ethos. "I don't want bluesky joining mastodon". But none of these platforms have a personality that's likely to last. They're gonna change immensely over time. Such that choosing between them isn't going to stay meaningful. The only thing that is meaningful is people getting together and creating governance structures. That's the way you exert control over your environment.

The reason I like this is that it combines two of things that I think are important for the longevity of a decentralized social.
1. I can opt-in to an environment that aligns with my values and gives me the kind of controls I care about.
2. I can still interact with a much wider ecosystem in the way that I choose to. I'm not locked out of interoperating with other networks. But it's also not open season.

The other thing that I think is important is individual identity. I don't want my identity to be tied to a particular platform ever again. I'm gonna stay me even as different platforms and trends rise and fall. (this shouldn't be that hard tbh. Just let me use my personal domain)

@polotek I love your ideas on this. It's kind of what I'm thinking also, the future is probably going to be some flavor of "I interact with ActivityPub using X client and Y server that applies rules I agree with and that keep me safe".

The more different services adopt ActivityPub, the less social media is a location and the more it's a set of interactions you agree to.

On this particular feature, did you have a look at #nostr? I find this approach of key-based identity much more easy to grasp for ordinary people than other concepts (DNS...)

@lutindiscret my perception of nostr is Jack Dorsey's crypto boondoggle. So no, I haven't looked at it.
